All I want for Christmas is….

Christmas-wrapping

Go on, be honest, gorgeous bags and shoes make up a fairly large percentage of your own Christmas wish list (really amazing ones that is). And the same goes for all those other special ladies in your life. And why not! A pair of amazing shoes can make you feel festive all year round, won’t ever need to be dusted, and have zero fat content.

Now, you might need to do a little detective work to find out their size, but with our Novo shoes Christmas Gift Guide in hand, your efforts will definitely be less painful (and more appreciated) than anything you’ll be able to scrap together at the Shopping Centres right now.  Not to mention a box-o-shoes is one of the easiest things to wrap. So it really is win, win!

Your hipster little sister
She might think she’s got more hipster flare than Rihanna and the scruffy Olsen twin combined, but you still remember those elastic waisted hand-me-downs she lived in as a kid. Keep that little secret between the two of you (for now), and treat her to these bang-on kicks (in fact, get a pair for yourself too, saves the fights when you try and steal hers later on).

Hippie

Your older sister (you know, the one with all the kids!)
Until they invent stain proof everything, or mute button that works on toddlers, why not pick up these Wizard of Oz inspired ballet flats instead. They tick both the fun, and practical boxes, plus you’ll help remind dear big Sis that there really is ‘No place like home…’  (yes, even her home).

Clove

Your boss
Not just because she signs your pay checks (but mostly that), but what better way to show your appreciation than with this chic-yet-classic tote. The perfect colour, shape and size to fit all her boss-lady life essentials, and she’ll think (favourably) of you every time she wears it.

Z86132_Stone

Your bestie
She’s seen you at your best, your worst, and everything in between. She’s your go-to-gal when there are Channing Tatum DVDs to be watched, and tables to be danced on, and these super high-heels are exactly what she wants to be wearing when you next do both!

Gracie

Your mum
You know how much your mum likes to say “Oh, my daughter gave me these”, well these bright-on wedges can’t help but invite compliments (just be prepared to hear about how much Mrs So-and-so liked them most weekends until next Christmas).

Valetta

(… your self!)
Christmas shopping done? Then you definitely deserve a treat! And I couldn’t think of a better way to reward yourself than with this Summer party-perfect clutch. And now is the perfect time to be splurging on yours truly, because your better half will almost-correctly assume anything new was a gift.  Merry Christmas!

Happy Feet!

Hands up if you’re feeling a little, well, blah?

Maybe you’ve recently realised you have to brave the Christmas shopping crowds sometime in the next month. Maybe you’re just in dire need of some vacay time (not long now). Or, maybe you’re feeling a little down in the dumps because it’s time to make your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions (and you still haven’t quite gotten around to doing the ones for 2012… or 2011).

Either way, there is only one known cure. Shoes!  And more importantly, brightly coloured, bring-a-smile-to-your-dial heels, flats or wedges.

Not just the hottest trend going around (again) thanks to the runways of Prada, Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore and DKNY, colour popping your hooves will make even the dreariest not-really-Summer Melbourne day instantly more cheery.

And why is that you ask? Well there is actually a whole psychology behind how wearing certain colours can affect your mood (you can Google it), and thanks to the brighter-than-bright footwear trend that is just everywhere right now, there is no easier way to add a rainbow-infused pick-me-up to your day than via your feet.

If you’re feeling  … stressed:  Then you’ll want to slip your tootsies into a pair of green or blue wedges. Both these colours are associated with calming and refreshing (and we all need a bit of that this time of year!), plus don’t forget wedges are so comfy they are like a cuddle for your feet, so it’s win, win!

If you’re feeling… sad: Pop on some very un-mellow yellow strappy sandals. This sunshiny colour is associated with all things warm and happy, and is basically guaranteed to give your cheeks a work out when you’re wearing it.

If you’re feeling… unmotivated: Sure you could leave that massive to-do list until the New Year, but the act of simply slipping on a pair of orange hued pumps will not only up your style score (coral is the colour of 2012), but you’ll suddenly be all kinds of enthusiastic about finishing that end of year report.  Orange is the colour of creativity, enthusiasm and action, plus it looks amazing against your spray tan.

Not convinced??? Well there is only one way to prove me wrong, and that is to pop on a pair of highly hued heels (any of these super blazing pairs should do the trick!),  and then see what happens.

Save your suitcase space: The only 3 pairs of shoes you need for your next vacay!

If you’ve been following along with this blog you’ll know that I have been in the process of exchanging my own always-incorrectly-spelled-surname, for the even more impossible to spell one of my BF. Aka, I’m getting married!

Now while some brides seem to breeze through the whole wedding process, hair and sanity intact. I have not. In the count down to the big day I am slowly melting down into a puddle of nerves and crazy wedding nightmares (I keep dreaming I lose my wedding dress, and have to find a replacement … in Target!!). And the only thing that is getting me through, is the warm, sunny, cocktail-filled light at the end of the tunnel.  Our honeymoon.

As it is becoming increasingly apparent to me, my brain and all its decision making capabilities has decided to abandon ship right now, along with my ability to sleep through the night, and my previously pimple free complexion (TMI?). This has left me on several occasions staring blankly into an empty suitcase with absolutely no idea how to fill it. So for my own benefit, and for anyone else who is about to Jet set off on their own vacay, I thought I’d put some of my sleepless nights to good use and have compiled the ultimate packing guide… for shoes. Because really these are the building block of any good outfit, and they also take up the most suitcase space. So nailing this is pretty much as important as remembering where exactly that safe place is that you’ve put your passport!

Tropical holidays are all about being able to go from beach to bar to pool and back again, plus you’ll need a monsoon safe pair just in case it rains.

A city break for me means two things, shopping and bar hopping.  Both of these can be pretty hard work on your feet! The perfect shoe-drobe for this trip is a pair of pavement pounding flats, plus goes with everything heels for day and for night (and because you will probably end up wearing some of your new purchases,  at least one should be neutral toned that will go with anything!).

You’ll probably be snuggled up in front of the roaring fire for most of this trip, but if you do venture out into the local village you’ll want a pair of something country-road friendly (but still cute), and also some dressed-up, but not OTT heels (wouldn’t want the locals gossiping too much) for when you go for a counter tea at the local pub.

PS – If you are off trekking the Kakoda trail or some other crazy-active pursuit, then you already know that strappy shoes are just not going to fit into your back pack, so sorry lovelies you’re just going to have to deal with it.

With these heels…I thee wed: Finding your wedding-day sole mates

I know most little girls dream about their “Big Day”, and a lot of that fantasising is focussed fairly squarely on “The Dress”. But growing up as a ripped-jeans and band T-shirt wearing kind of girl, my bridal dreams were less about the dress (I couldn’t actually ever imagine myself wearing one), and more about what would peep out at the bottom of it.

Namely the most awesome pair of razzle-dazzle statement shoes (ever), and the rest (dress, cup-cake tower, husband) was just a bonus!

Now there are two schools of thought when it comes to picking your wedding shoes. The first is that they should match your dress (because matchy-matchy is always such a good look??), and be of a sensible height (again… why?? On the day you want to look your best I see no reason to turn your back on the leg lengthening, bum pertyfying properties that sky-highs bestow upon us. You’re strapped into a dress you can barely breathe in anyway and have roughly 685 bobby pins digging in to your skull. Why try and be sensible now!).

And then there is my school, which is that there are no rules other than they should make your heart skip a beat when you see them… kind of like the man waiting for you at the end of the aisle.

With that in mind when it came to picking out the shoes for my up-coming nuptials I actually decided to jump on a plane with my maid of honour and track down my dream-heels in the shopping Mecca that is New York City (any excuse!). And yes, they are everything I dreamed of (both pairs).

But if you are looking for something just as fab, and a little close to home then prepare to doodle love hearts all over these better-than-the-dress heels from Novoshoes.com.au

Why not kill toe birds with one stone. Plus it makes an adorable photo (like the one above)!

Your heels of choice don’t have to be highly pigmented to turn heads!

OK, so if you do really value being able to feel your feet at your reception, then you don’t miss out on some rather special foot candy either. Like these…

6 top tips for a well-heeled Spring Racing Carnival

Are you ready for the big race?? And by “big race” I don’t mean the ACTUAL horses running in a circle shenanigans (yep, there are horses at the Spring Carnival… who knew!).  I am talking about the far more adrenaline pumping and important dash to snag the ultimate trackside outfit!

Now as a born-and-bred Melbournite, and also a Spring Racing veteran (10 years and counting!), I feel like I am fairly qualified to dish out some often forgotten dos and don’ts for preparing your hooves and heels for the betting ring. As well as some of my favourite heel styles around this Spring.

Source: Racing Victoria www.racingvictoria.net.au/springracingcarnival

1 – DO – Wear wedges or chunky block heels. Not just because they are more comfy when you are standing in them for hours on end, but also because you won’t end up stuck heel-deep in the grass.

2 – DO – Remember to waterproof! Spring weather is as temperamental as a toddler with ADHD! And if it’s not chucking it down on the actual day, it probably was the day before, so mud is a very real risk. Also over excited punters combined with teeny champagne glasses often ends in horrible stains and ruined suede, so don’t say we didn’t warn you!

3 – DON’T – Forget to wear them in first! You are crazier than Courtney Love if you think that even the comfiest of heels won’t still find some way of rubbing or pinching after six-plus hours of wearing them. Or at the very least pack lots of Bandaids.

4 – DON’T – Wear flats. You won’t be able to see over all the fascinators for one, and you’ll also get trodden on… a lot!

5 – DO – Remember to be ladylike with the rest of your outfit as well. You should look like you are going to a fancy wedding, not on your way home from a club.

6 – DO – Have fun with colours, prints and metallics. There are so many amazing styles around this season, so there is no excuse to be boring. Like these…

Emily’s SS12 Must Haves

My aunty loved shoes. She used to have a dressing room full of them. Wall to wall shoes, bags and accessories. Some of my earliest memories are of examining her Walter Steiger curved heel pumps, tracing the shape of the heel with wonderment. Today I find myself examining the trend again in the spotlight with the same fascination.

As well as running a fashion empire with her husband, she was a woman of great personal style. Always basing her outfit around her shoes, she used to say that “It doesn’t matter what you are wearing, as long as your shoes are good you will look good.” Just as the Steiger heels are back in vogue so is her advice. Fashion is turning to our toes for inspiration. Street style blogs are consistently pointing the camera below the hemline searching for inspiration. It’s about details, the accessories.

So with the spotlight in fashion firmly on footwear Novo has answered with styles that speak directly to what we want to wear now.

Heading into summer the sandal has been revitalized. The sandal has become tough, sleek, modern armor for your feet. The Balenciaga laced sandal highlights the blossoming trend abroad. Novo’s Roman and Suddenly styles, are perfect versions of the trend for edgy summer looks.

Studdenly, Roman

Metallic accents are a shining example of how to update a classic look. Metallic toecaps toughen up pumps and ballet flats. The Irista and Evonne styles are a fusion of function and fancy. The Cascade in full metallic will add an extra sparkle to your step.

Evonne, Irista

Sporty styles deliver a winning look. It’s all in the detail. Ankle straps, perforated leather details, fluro accents are all key players. The Romeo and Duplex perforated styles get the ball rolling for day while the Darcy, Volumn, Morgan and Burley cover off night.

Volumn, Darcy, Morgan, Romeo, Duplex

Colour is playful in accessories this season, applied with an artists’ eye. The Spritz in cobalt blue channels Nicholas Kirkwood’s mastery of colour and form and is worth adding to your collection. The Orchella resembles an original watercolour painting with the hand-finished look of a master painter. The Umbre, another worthy addition to any art lovers’ collection.

Spritz, Orchella, Umbre

Whatever you fancy – function or form – Novo has a shoe that will fit every time.

SS12 Trends

There is a saying – to understand a person you first need to walk in their shoes. The same can be said for fashion. Novo chose to walk in the designs of some of Melbourne’s hottest labels for their Spring Summer campaign.  Here we walk you through the latest accessory trends of the season along side our favourite Melbourne labels; Obus, Livia Arena, Jolet, Leonard Street, Alexi Freeman, Búl and Kuwaii. Informed by fashion directions locally and abroad, the Novo range will keep you one step ahead.

Fashion food for thought. Powdery pastels resembling sugared almonds, teacakes, and sorbet ice cream offer a palette for summer good enough to eat. Enjoy several flavours, I mean shades, at once. Novo’s Splice platform dishes up the trend perfectly.  Apricot, pink and aqua shaped into the season’s hottest cutaway wedge channels the coveted Celine style. Chase down a pair now and team with some guilt free shades in cute flip skirts, cigarette pants and ice-cream inspired prints.

Splice, Future, Carmina

Trend in clothing

Obus and Livia Arena

Spring into the new season with the rosiest hues from scarlet to fuchsia, lipstick and pale pink. One of the best rules to break in fashion is the red/pink combo. Pink is pretty, but it also has an air of Parisian cool this summer when worn head to toe. Red commands attention. Make a powerful statement in searing sandals and low platforms like the Visco for day – hot hot hot. Local labels have honed in on red for the season too, their collections ablaze with original prints.

Nebraska, Worstell, Visco

Trend in clothing

Kuwaii and Leonard Street

A romantic and dark mood is casting a shadow too, black and white the guiding palate. But black is by no means basic. The new mood is about creating curves and dramatic shapes. Cut out details create an architectural line that curve, frame and flatter the foot. It signals a return to a tailored silhouette with a razor sharp edge. The artful Micam and Brighton style shoes form the foundation of an architectural look. A sharp jacket or LBD are the perfect partners in crime.

Brighton, Micam, Velocity (in stores end of Sept)

Jolet

The season’s penchant for colour and dramatic lines is tempered by a strong trend toward earthy styles. Drawn from the natural world the trend blends seamlessly into your existing wardrobe. Mixing fabrications and finishes gives the look depth and texture.  Try the Volt wedge on for size teamed back with some suitably subtle pieces – your shoes will do the talking and your clothes will listen.

Neon Fever

I can’t think of any better way than to heat up the dreary winter weeks with a pop of technicolour neon colour, whether adding to your wardrobe, jewellery collection or make up bag, this simple statement of vibrance will pick up the pace in any situation.

I’ve seen the trend evolve since the 80′s and this time round everyone finally has it right! No more lycra leggings, think sport luxe modern clean lines and punchy pop colour shapes.

Neon was all over the recent shows at Australian fashion week, with designers Romance Was Born, Manning Cartell, Magdalena Velevska and Ginger & Smart all referencing the street savvy trend in their collections and accessories.

Think tones of India’s vibrant Gulal powders in acid green, fluro yellow, iridescent cobalt blue and electro pop pink, these technicolour twist tones work back with khaki military anoraks, neutral separates and metallic modern skirt shapes in foil tones of gunmetal silver, copper and bronze.

Below:  Bags available at Novo in September.

The trend also highlighted itself in the dominance of handbags, clutches and statement totes – the new Hermes Toolbox 26 bag is arm candy heaven and Proenza Scholar’s tri tone neon green shoulder bag is pure envy, for a traditional take on neon the Cambridge Satchel Company takes the cake! – Where upon you can add personalised initials to your neon shoulder satchel! I’ve spotted many on the fashionable streets of Sydney!

Australian designer Rachel Gilbert’s lime green skater skirt and body-con dress are the perfect additions to enhance the trend, by keeping the silhouette simple the colour looks smart and sharp. Add a hero jacket in biker leather or a classic sharp shouldered blazer (resting on the shoulders of course) for a fashion pack front row approach.

When taking the neon palette to the shoe wardrobe, international footwear collections covered all aspects, from pointy flats to pumped up platforms the catwalk wish list is endless, and even converse took to the trend.

Try the neon styles available at Novo now:

Clay $39.95

Kalipso $19.95

Inca $69.95 (Available Aug/Sept)

And if you are hesitant to take on too much colour, then keep it minimal with accessories – add a statement neon Peter Lang crystal necklace over a buttoned up denim shirt, layer up on Lotus Mendes cocktail rings, add a fluro skinny belt, carry a tough luxe boxy clutch and let polished nails from Nars and OPI take the trend to new lengths.

Neon, lets you leave winter behind even if we still have a few months to go!

Step It Up – Platforms

I have always had a passion for platforms, whether they are heels, boots or wedges! I blame my mother for the amount of money that I have spent on an obsession that originally caught my eye in the 70′s! Mum wore it well! And so did all of the 70′s classic TV favourites like Farrah Fawcett!

Whether they be winter or summer styles, platforms work for all seasons and NOVO has designed an amazing collection in a variety of textures, colours and fabrics that work in your wardrobe for any occasion.

When looking for some extra height (every day for me!) the platform shoe hits the mark! And actually I find this design much more comfortable than the average flat soled heel. The extra inch or so gives a much more comfortable balance to the foot, and not to mention I can actually wear these designs all day without arriving home in agony!

When shopping for a platform heel, first look for a style that is flattering to the shape of your foot, no one wants to look like they have heavy feet. And also there is nothing worse than looking uncomfortable and awkward while trying to navigate the extra height in the sole. I have noticed girls trying to make this trend work, but without a little practice (at home is best) you can look like you may take an unfortunate tumble or take on attention from people passing by wondering if you are needing a little help walking!

When adding an inch or two in heels I generally always stick to the same similar styles;

For high waisted flared jeans; look for platforms with an open toe platform shoe in a neutral tone. Denim looks fabulous with earthy neutrals, navy, and even ruby red! The open toe keeps the leg long, while a closed toe platform ends the leg line with a closed confronted colour.

Try these open toe platform heel styles:

Farris, Leonara and Bellbird.

Celebrities that love this 70′s style are: Jessica Biel, Katie Holmes-Cruise and Victoria Beckham (however VB is always wearing a platform)!

For skinny jeans that finish on or above the ankle (this is the best look) I would always opt for a platform that is a pump, or a cut down platform ankle boot open to the ankle (unfortunately T-bar styles don’t work with skinny jeans, however they are fabulous with other outfits)

Try these classic pump styles: (and on a stylist note role the skinny jean in a messy cuff to create a focal point between the jean and shoe)

Illy, Blokk, Bentley!

Celebrities like Fergie, Kim Kardashian, Kate Moss and Miranda Kerr all love this trend.

When wearing an ankle boot look for a style that gives you a gap of skin similar to the pump, a hint of natural skin allows an elongation focal point. These ankle boots also work back with vintage dresses, and for a preppy look nothing looks as best as shorts, tanks and blazers.

Try these ankle boots:

Jewel, Spirit (my obsession)! And Bennett

Celebrities who have defined this trend are: Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry, Kate Moss and Emma Stone.

If you are choosing a platform soled boot, keep it to a maximum 1/2 inch or less, otherwise it can, with the wrong clothing look like fancy dress! Most of us have watched or know the film, ‘Austin Powers’ so let’s just say this trend in white patent has to stay in the costume box!

Enjoy your platforms, there is not a day that I don’t!

Knee High Boots

We all know that ankle boots recently had a global fashion takeover (models and celebrities are to blame)! But let’s not forget the boots we turn to when the weather takes a chilly twist.  They maybe old fashioned wardrobe friends but at least the latest designs keep us coming back for more!

The Equestrian Boot - Who said the classic equestrian boot, was tired?  Take one look at the Gucci campaign with Charlotte Casiraghi (Monaco royalty) and you will revert back to nothing but the classics! The equestrian knee high boot will never be out of the fashion world, it’s a comeback kid and may also if you’re lucky on the right occasion nab yourself an international polo player! There is nothing more sophisticated than a classic knee high ‘EB’ (equestrian boot), skinny jeans and a Ralph Lauren polo (ok maybe to much)? At least this look will instantly send you to Argentina or The Hamptons! If this is a stretch out of your wardrobe comfort zone, keep you’re styling in neutral, basic denim or black, this ‘EB’ deserves nothing but respect and sophistication!

Try these styles:

Mandella (classic equestrian loyalty), Brimstone (the ‘polo’ boot to whisk you into riding royalty) Ceron (everyone needs a heeled version for night).

The Wedge Boot - Who said wedges were just for pumps and ankle boots? The best way to get around any ski mountain in style is in a wedge boot! Just because you’re in bulky ski or snow board gear all day does not mean that’s the look to take out on the town later! For night you need to look casual but feel that you have at least had a change of style, and personally I’m loving the effect of the NOVO – Harvey boot (Am I in Aspen? Kate Hudson would be so jealous!) Now, I don’t want to biased and limit the wedge boot just to the ski mountains, try the NOVO Moskow (an instant way to add colour to a wedge boot, once again tight skinny jean or dense tight (crotch covered) or Nowelle (a keep it neutral Blake Lively classic)!

Try these styles:

Harvey, Moskow and Nowelle

The Over the Knee Boot - I have a slight obsession with ‘over the knee boot’ and it’s not just because Julia Roberts held hers together with a safety pin in the hit movie – ‘Pretty Woman’ it’s because every time I see a celebrity or ‘fashion girl styling it on the streets – correctly,’ I take a second look! I actually wear my ‘OTKB’ (not a new band its code for ‘over the knee boots’) on a regular basis in winter.  Not only do women love it so do men. Let’s face it, this style is pretty sexy worn correctly e.g. with skinny jeans, loose T or shirt, super structured blazer and not a short tight skirt or a mini dress in sight! Note to self – if you do decide to wear a high density black tight with a OTKB make sure to style it back with an oversized top that covers the crotch line, e.g. FASHION RULE tights are not pants!

Try these styles:

Dublin (high heel over the knee boots in black and beige – for nights out work a statement OTKB with skinny jeans or dense tights, these boots are a fashion statement on their own – Fergie would work this with her eyes closed), Holland (wedge heel over the knee boot in taupe and black – perfect for daytime hanging with the girls, super comfort and a classic shape, keep the wardrobe neutral, these boots do not need another trend to take their shine) and Nessa, the perfect flat OTKB in camel and black!

A few OTKB tips:

I always purchase ‘booty shapers’ to maintain and preserve the shape in my boots, ‘booty shapers’ are blow up boot fillers available online, www.bootyshapers.com

Slip into an opaque knee high stocking, bulky socks just add to discomfort and stretch your boots.

If you have a micro suede neutral boot, use a white rubber eraser to remove any scuff marks.

By the way I’m wearing my OTKB tonight!

Ankle Boots

You can never have enough shoes – flats, boots and platform pumps in your wardrobe, and with the Winter months approaching the stores are now filled with fabulous new winter footwear.  Recently there has been resurgence in ankle boots, not just any ankle boots, now there are as many styles to choose from as their best new wardrobe friend – the platform pump!  I suppose the main effect of an abundance of this must have super model boot on the shelves is that is draws from the power of the ‘celebrity’.  Kate Moss can take most of the credit, (she can also take most of the credit for over a 1000 other fashion trends)! Whether dressing down in denim shorts or teaming up with a skinny jean, the real statement ankle boot is a mix of festival, street and boyfriend design.  What appeals to this trend is that anyone, any body shape and size looks great in it, also the comfort factor rates very high and the vintage model/celebrity appeal is an instant wardrobe ‘look at me/chase me paparazzi’ moment.

The Combat Boot - This is the favoured fashion look for Miranda Kerr, Kate Moss, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba (she loves hers with skinny coloured jeans)! This style although perfect as a cool hunter flat, has a strong sex appeal with a 2 inch block heel, I’m always in favour of a heel, so if you can manage it, this design will always be super savvy high street.  For a downtown dabble mix this boot back with a denim shirt, optional fedora and festival shorts (please cover the cheeks)! You’ve got winter road tripping covered now.

Try these styles:

Ashton (stylist moment – optional fold over plaid lining), Utility (for a so-now ‘rock on’ tribute), Alpine (super sexy look)

The Pull On Riding Boot - As a past and prominent equestrian rider it is always interesting when part of your ‘after school hobby’ wardrobe becomes a fashion trend (think sailing every Saturday and now having to wear a nautical T)! Although I have a relationship already with this style I’m loving the new way to wear it (thank god no Jodhpur action here)! Kate Bosworth and Nicole Richie often channel the vintage pretty dress back with this boot, and also often take it on a rock n roll tour.  Leather jacket (try Zara for the latest take on international trends) cropped skinny pants (a little ankle action on display slims the leg-line) and a basic t-shirt or tank and you will need your own security!

Try these styles:

Jayson and  Journey (for a cool cult NY super model purchase) and my favourite Judo (leg elongation (tick) and my new must have now ‘out of the stables’ fashion update!)

Utility Lace Up Boot – Jess Hart loves this boot and ‘works it’ whether hanging out at an NY diner or super cool private club surrounded by her celebrity friends. Jess keeps her effortless fashion appeal to oversized khaki military jackets and optional denim and basic T’s. For night team a heeled utility with a harder edgy leather mini dress, red lip and bed hair.  The military boot will always be an urban street hero, think a touch of soldier (who doesn’t love a man in uniform!)  Style with a feminine print dress and structured blazer or a tailored mini skirt and loose ‘equipment’ silk shirt for a global military fashion takeover.

Try these styles:

Ruckus (ultra cool utility lace up flat boot – you are now channelling the model crew) Krew (utility wedge in charcoal with all of the added detailed extra’s) Hiker (I remember J-Lo rocking this style)

Special military mention here – Jackson – the ultimate ankle loving desert boot!

Wedge Boots - Who doesn’t love comfort and super model height all in one shoe?  The ultimate ankle boot is the ‘wedge’ – add a platform to it and watch the envy all around you as you navigate your day. With so many options, which design and why?  The block colour neutral front wedge has an infinity to stretch the leg-line, with a tan coloured micro suede front and block black back, this wedge has all the fashion rules covered.  Wear with black opaques a denim vintage mini, loose boyfriend knit and sharp shoulder blazer.  Another super cool NOVO ankle boot is the utility wedge with multi buckle details, be ready to be stopped in the street especially if you opt for the super styling plum version.

Try these styles:

Desio (midnight blue front, black back ‘leg envy’ block colour wedge – so seeing Chloe Sevigny in this) Trilogy (Utility black or coloured wedge, a SJP moment) Beaufort (for the office and typical Kate Middleton classic London style – sophisticated? Tick!)

The Block Heel Boots – Sometimes you just feel like making an entrance, and these sky high block heeled ankle boots are the perfect partner in crime! Covetable in every way, stack your shoe wardrobe with these ‘legs look super lean’ designs. Teamed with opaque tights they take on the best of the fashionistas. There can be no wrong here as long as skinny jeans are tucked in and no wide legged pants are used.

Try these styles:

Dorato (I can see J-Lo in these now!), Snaked (try a Lana Del Ray 60′s vision – especially in snakeskin) Spinn (Victoria Beckham must already have this)?

Wardrobe Essentials

With so many styles of shoes to choose from these days, what should you look for in flats, mid heels and pumps?

The first rule of purchasing shoes is truly comfort, like me I’m sure you have had a regretful and painful purchase, nearly cried wearing shoes that can cause blisters, and even considered — is there any operation to have my feet changed to fit these fabulous shoes that I’m devastated I cannot wear!

1.  Everybody hates blisters, not only painful and unattractive but also annoying to wear any other shoes that then irritate the area….note to self — no pain no gain does not work here!

2. Shoes stretch but not necessarily overnight, if they (flats included) do not fit  — do not make the purchase (I had a YSL tribute pump moment in Barneys, New York that devastated me when I was in between sizes – I went back to the store 4 times to try them on, total meltdown)!

3. While the trend of the moment maybe hot, certain shapes in footwear can be unflattering, e.g.: cut off the leg (go for – elongation as it gives instant slimming proportions), and worst of all, shoes that give you cankles (when unfortunately calf and ankles look the same shape due to ankle straps and weird patterns).

FLATS
Why not slip into something a little more man style in loafers and moccasins this season, or try a girly?

Flat footwear notably is always a classic look, worn with capri style coloured jeans, cut off shorts, simple shift dresses and pencil skirts, these comfortable footwear staples are a great way to look and feel updated without the pain from wearing heels all day.

You can take advantage and add colour to your work attire with a bright ballet, or for weekend wear, keep it cool and grungy with an edgy hard working utility boot (e.g my wish list designer – Isabel Marant).

Style crush – Alexa Chung, Kate Bosworth, Taylor Swift, Miranda Kerr and of course the honourable Kate Moss!

Try NOVO styles – Airlie, Cookie and Hugo

MID HEEL
Mid heel options are always a safe alternative to sky scraper heels, (personally I just go straight to the highest heel I can possibly wear) but this heel height option is a great introduction to wary feet who have a uncomfortable dislike to super-sized stilettos.

Look for a heel shape that is still complimentary to the legline, without too much pattern and remember to keep the style of clothing ladylike and classic.

Style Crush – Kate Middleton, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and hot model/ actress Rosie Huntington-Whitely!

Try NOVO styles – Button, Sleek, and Gigi

PUMPS
Super size me pumps are some of my closet companions and closest footwear friends!

Take shades of nude, beige, tan, biscuit, and any other earthy natural tone as this classic colour is my only go to for lengthening legs and adding the extra inches most girls love.

Opt also for the latest shoe crush colours and work it back with denim, this look is Super Hot!!!

Style Crush – J Lo, Victoria Beckham, Fergie and Gwyneth to name a few celebrities in sky high pumps!

Try NOVO styles – Flax, Everest and for colour – Gilbert

See you next time! Jo x

Coloured Shoes

Coloured shoes are a fabulous way to add a touch of fashion pack style to your everydaylook.

I’ve been constantly eyeing off and (secretly not saving) by purchasing bright coloured shoes in this seasons hues, let’s be honest — you and I cannot really get enough of these latest NOVO inspired jewel coloured ankle embracing styles!

My designer foot fetish menu consists of suede pumps, wedges, stacked platform Mary Jane platform sandals, booties and ballets!  Shades of electric blue, pinkest raspberry, emerald green and must have magenta make it a hard choice to consider.

It really is about…not just the colour that I have a problem trying to decide upon but which style best suits my personal style and my take on the trend.

So what shape best suits your style and how do I wear it?

Suede pumps in any colour are the easiest ad-adaptation to instantly update any set of toes looking for look at me action!  Closed toe suede pumps with an interior or exterior platform are super-hot, they elongate the leg, showcase the ankle and scream — ‘take a look at my new foot candy!’ I constantly have footwear envy whenever I see anyone correctively carrying out and pulling off this new look, it’s not that hard to do, however there are a few rules……

Bright coloured hot new suede pumps do and do not like to be mixed with….

The yes I know what I’m doing wardrobe wise rules….

  1. They love coloured denim! (And patterned but only the jungle varieties) Yes you can wear these with your latest coloured jeans with a basic T-shirt and man style blazer, and let’s not ever forget, chanel inspired bag — so celebrity chic! Add a twisted rolled up hem to your jeans for an ankle envy zone!
  2. Neutral skirts, loose ‘Equipment’ silk shirts in white, khaki and soft shell pink, now you only need a sexy solid wrist cuff and work style satchel to take office boredom to boardroom beauty!
  3. Denim cut offs (no butt cheeks required here, personally still scarred by this festival carry on) white tank, woven loose knit and why not…throw in an Alexander McQueen skull scarf (never out of fashion) sleeves pushed up – Hello! No Brainer!!!
  4. Anything Alexander Wang, Dion Lee, Ellery, Lover, and Willow in black! (Just to name a few)!

I’m trying…still haven’t found my footing (no pun intended)! rules….

  1. Any fabric in tartan, checks, coloured patterns… and also please never Missoni! No, no, no!
  2. Another close clothing friend in a bright colour unless you are in a band, from Tokyo or just super cool anyway!
  3. A patterned tight, bad spray tan or any dress in metallic!

Peep toe platforms allow you to showcase the hottest new nail colours like Chanel’s LE VERNIS nail colour ‘Blue Boy’ the most fabulous chic new shade from the latest Cruise Collection. And if you are not the proudest owner of your pedicured feet you can always add opaque tights, black will always be an instant go to, however a coloured tight can also be a glamorous way to add jewel tone leg colour, however be careful this look can be slightly un-slimming and can also be circus like! Try to keep bright coloured shoes and hosiery the main focus at all times, for nights out and for weekends pair hip down brights back with denim, and for day, all clothing items in a neutral hue work best.

This trend alert also works best with booties and platform Mary Janes (my personal favourite, super sexy and super slimming).

As above all of the rules are requested for these footwear categories, however everyone has their own take on any trend, why not send me your stylish pics working this hot trend!

Autumn / Winter 2012 – Bag Trends

Why is it so difficult to refrain from buying one bag and being happy with the purchase?  I know that I have struggled for years to find a natural balance with my bank account by trying to obtain a sensible 3 bag minimum quota per year (well you need at least one for work, one for going out and a clutch for special occasions) Unfortunately the rules have been a little harder to follow than I would have hoped and my bag addiction for years has spiralled out of control!  Oh well, a new handbag of any type instantly adds on trend accessory heaven!  And I’m not looking at stopping my love for the new trends hitting the NOVO stores soon!

With so many styles to choose between, I have decided to break down a couple of the categories so we can all try and work out which one or how many we need from NOVO now!

The envelope bag or baguette shoulder bag is one of the most versatile bags around (I use my Chanel 2.55 everyday) the similar shape and chain shoulder strap makes for a perfect partner for day or night situations.  The chain strap (one of my personal favourite accessory details) is an instant international street style update to any outfit.  Think Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Kate Bosworth to name a few!  The envelope or baguette style in itself allows you to only leave the house with the basics, now I’m talking about your favourite lipstick, lip gloss, hair brush, keys, and of course money.  This bag really teaches you about bag content control, there really is a wonderful feeling about carrying around a limited amount of personal goodies, my life for example has taken a dramatic step towards simplicity, and you really do not need anything else!  The ultimate reason to complete your wardrobe collection with this style is the award that this bag receives for convenience, comfort, and general gorgeousness and last but not least, you can turn it into an evening clutch in an instant, just tuck in the chain and away you go!  Look for the sequin style for instant wardrobe envy, wear with basic tanks and denim as the celebs do or clutch it for night!

Chain Clutch

Totes are the perfect travel companion, not only can they be carried by the hand, the celebrity approach (the elbow) or when a little heavy, the shoulder, they ultimately are a classic and practical approach to the office without looking daggy!  Considering the working day consists of many new gadgets, the ipad, iphone, and kindle for example the tote is the perfect shape and size to carry all of your fancy new communication devices but also the latest magazines and of course the beauty basics.  This season try a tote in a new organic colour palette of mustard, teal or orange.  As most women wear black to work, a hint of colour is a great way to spice up your outfit and also experiment with autumn colour.  My personal favourite way of making this the ultimate office attire is to work it back into my wardrobe by keeping my silhouette simplistic; too much clash of colour can be a disaster!

Tote Bag

Simple classic clutches are so chic, as I’ve said before; we all generally only need a couple of items in our carry on!  I’m even partial to a clutch during the day, I may have been first introduced to this trend when Carrie from Sex in the City made it work and to be honest, I loved it!  I actually remember purchasing a bright blood red MIU MIU satin clutch and claiming the trend as one of my own ‘best on ground’ personal daytime experiences! The clash of a clutch with a casual classic simple look of a basic white t-shirt or tank, denim jeans, (high heels of course) and a clutch bag screams ‘fashion moment!’

Classic Clutch

Unfortunately for our wallets, this is just the tip of the NOVO fashion accessory iceberg! This season I’m obsessed with snakeskin, animal prints, over use of strapping details and patent leather.

Snake Skin

I’ll keep you updated as I purchase the new trends and trial them in various fashion situations!  Why not send me pics of your latest NOVO accessories out and about! They need to have their own fashion moment recognised too!

Autumn / Winter 2012 – Shoe Trends

I have always had a love affair with shoes and bags……and I’m sure I’m not the only shopaholic obsessing over the 2012 trends and styles!

The new autumn winter season is certainly upon us so it’s time to mentally prepare…how will I be able to resist the challenge to open my wallet to a specific pair, and how many am I allowed to gift my proudly pedicured feet! With so many styles to choose from how can anyone make such an executive decision, or let’s be honest maybe it’s time to come clean…. I have an addiction!

I have defined what I think will make this a little easier…My way of shopping the new shoe collections is to start off with the styles that will instantly update my wardrobe, then I can add the fashion component as the stores deliver the new clothing trends.

Note to self – Luxury has no boundaries when it comes to a statement tote or heel! It’s an investment after all and here’s how I see it!

The latest trends are defined into several categories:

Boozy Colours

Some of our favourite grape varieties are defined in this bordeaux group, think rich claret, classic burgundy and deep grape violet. Just like looking at a wine list, how can anyone choose which drop will suit your palette?  Any ofthese sultry classy classic colours will instantly update your shoe wardrobe in fabrics of suede and satin.  A berry crush of merlot hues also sits closely next to top shelf spirits of cognac and brandy, invest in this pure liquid gold, the bar fridge never looked better!

Boozy Colours

Jewel Tones

Calling all uptown girls! The most desired stones in the world are not just clarified to diamonds, the most valuable are often the rarest and are opulent in rich tones of emerald, ruby and sapphire.  Luxe silky satin and sultry suede instantly glamorizes with a modern and fresh dash of cool that will steal the spotlight and make any outfit dazzle!

Jewel Tones

Neutrals

Keep your look eternally chic with the versatility and wearability of these conventional classics.  Shades of autumn come alive in organic smart neutrals of taupe, cocoa, tobacco and slate.  Try pairing camel with prints, patterns and acid brights that bounce off your neutral look.  This palette also screams head to toe timeless sophistication, why else would this never fail classic look have been perfect for any previous decade.

Neutrals
Masculine

Take a tailored and timeless approach with glam classics in laid back luxury details that include chunky heels, lace up details and old fashioned brogues.  Whether you prefer a smart suit or crisp separates these vintage masculine overtones strengthen a soft girly blouse or pretty lace dress. Laid back prim and proper luxury never looked so fresh, old is new again!

Masculine

Western

Saddle up with cowboy inspired ranch style footwear! Details of Fringing, buckles and elastic sides (for instant pull on equestrian chic) add a ‘rock-in rider’ rodeo feel to country classics.  Country wheat grass colours and ‘it girl’ black are all invited to the corral for a western party.

Western

Zoological

It’s no secret that big-cat patterns and exotic amphibian skins have roared back for another season. Unleash your inner temptress with leopard and cheetah prints for spot on designer chic. Mixed skins and furry trims will give any outfit a killer combination of sex appeal and safari style.

Zoological

Military

There has never been a better time to add heavy hardware for an evening affair, take a downtown approach with edgy footwear in multi textured combinations of leather and suede. Get an edge with hardcore elements of studs and utilitarian buckles for a high wattage honorary tour of duty!

Lets face it, just because it’s winter, it does not mean you have to leave all the fun and colour behind, tour the site and find your favourites.

I’ll be back soon to talk hand bag trends for AW 2012, in the meantime happy shopping!!

Lipstick types & how to wear them

Lipstick is a hit trend of the past few seasons. It is an accents, an accessory to the look even the outfit. But there is an array of lip products that give different amount of colour to the lips and have different texture and finish. So here are some of the main types of lipstick that are out there and the ways to wear each of them. Choose your favourite texture and finish.

Main Types of Lipstick:

6

Sheer  Lipstick

Sheer lipstick has a low-pigmented formula so rather than painting the lips different colour it simply adds just a tinge to the natural lip colour. Sheer lipstick can be used instead of lip balm for its moisturizing qualities and enhance the natural colour of the lips or add a different tint to it. It is also a great alternative to those who doesn’t favour glosses or full-coverage lipsticks. There are no wrong ways of wearing sheer lipstick. Just find the colour that suits you most.

Satin Lipstick

Satin lipstick is similar to the sheer lipstick as it has a hydrating formula and is not well-pigmented adding only a bit of colour rather than full coverage.

5

Cream Lipstick

Cream lipstick will give you most coverage and will look a bit glossy or dewy. Cream lipstick is a great way to add a pop of colour to the look as they can be highly pigmented. Cream lipsticks are best worn with lip liner of natural or same colour as the lipstick. The lip liner will prevent the lipstick from bleeding and can also act as primer for long-wearing effect. Be careful when choosing cream lipstick as its colour should suit your skin tone and undertones. Apply with a lip brush to control the coverage and colour intensity. Work your way with the brush from the middle of the lip to the borders.

 4

Matte Lipstick

Matte lipstick is one that has matte finish. It doesn’t shine and is completely gloss-free. It is also hard to pull off as matte texture can make lips look caked and show off the wrinkles. Matte lipstick can also make the lips look thinner especially in bright and dark colours so it’s important to choose the right colour when buying one. Many matte lipsticks dry out the lips. To make it work you can moisturize lips prior to lipstick application with some hydrating lip balm. Once it sets in, start applying the matte lipstick from the center of the lip to the borders. Adding gloss over matte lipstick will take away the matte finish so try to find one with a non-drying formula.

3

Shine Lipstick

Shine lipstick is infused with tiny sparkles that reflect light and make the lips look glossy. Thanks to the glossy finish lips look luscious and plump. To wear it choose the right color and apply to prepared lips. Avoid applying shine or any lipstick on chapped lips as all the cracks and chapped skin will show on the lips. Gently exfoliate the lips with lip scrub and hydrate with lip balm. If lips are cracked and bleed avoid using lipstick altogether and let them heal

2

Frosty Lipstick

Frosty lipstick, also known as pearlescent lipstick has been very popular in the 80′s but now can be considered out-dated. Nevertheless some celebs like Rihanna have sported pealescent lipstick and managed to pull it off. The main challenge with the frosty lipstick is the finish itself. When generously applied frosty lipstick can simply look bad. First of all make sure to choose the right colour for your skin tone. Be especially aware of light and pink colours as they can give an unflaterring contrast to your skin tone. If not sure leave frosty lipstick for special costume-y occasions and opt for a shine texture.

1

Lip Gloss/Tint/Stain

Lip gloss and other well known alternatives to a traditional lipstick aren’t quite lipsticks but we’ll talk about them as lip colour options here as well. A lip gloss is a good one. It’s  shiny, sparkly as well as it can be sheer, pigmented or slightly tinted. Gloss is a quick fix for a lip colour as it can be easily applied even without a mirror. Lip tint or lip stain is a product to enhance lip colour. It doesn’t give any finish to them only a tinge of colour.

3 Steps on the Way to Longer-looking Hair

There is nothing looking more feminine than long, healthy and glossy strands. But what a girl should do if her hair is not as long as she’d like to have. Well, the answer is quite simple! Grow hair long or create an illusion of longer hair using the following tricky ways.

Choosing a Haircut

The first step on the way to longer-looking hair is the proper haircut. Professionals here recommend to create a sort of blended layers instead of a flat cut. It will make your hair look more flowing and as a result a bit longer than it is. No matter how weird cutting your hair while you try to grow it long may seem, never neglect this point. Regular trimming of your tresses is essential if you’d like to have long and healthy hair.

df

Opting for a Proper Hair Part

Hair part also plays a great role when it comes to illusion of longer tresses. Hairstylists claim it is a central part that gives a slightly narrower effect and make our hair seem longer.

Adding a Bit of Volume

Flattening your hair down may seem the only right way to make your hair look longer, but actually it is a great blunder. Much more effective is to add a bit of volume to your strands. A little lift in the roots will give you a leaner and longer looking hair, though if only your tresses layered properly.

AW13 Makeup trends

Au Naturel

Au Naturel

Many designers chose to send their models to the catwalk au naturel. At Ralph Lauren and Narciso Rodriguez the complexions were fresh and gave off a bit of cheek color. The brows were natural and groomed.

Ombre Lips

Ombre Lip

Ombre lips were spotted at Ohne Titela and Costello Tagliapetra. At the first show the lips are done in red and orange contrasted with white complexion and eyeshadow while at the second they were done in pink shades with eyes accentuated with under eye purple eyeliner.

Bold Eyeliner

Bold Eyeliners

Speaking of eyeliner, at Anna Sui, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Karen Walker and Honor the eyeliner was bold and unusual. Honor chose elecrtic blue line over the upper lid while at Anna Sui the artists did a new take on black eyelienr with dotted lower eyelid.
